We all had our fantasies while growing up. About what we would like to be, the kind of person we would like to marry, the kind of life we would love to have. Unlike some people, I usually wrote down my dreams in my journal. I did it in a well structured list; kind of like a grocery list, only its not a grocery list of food. It was a grocery list of dreams.
If you have ever made such a list, its actually called a bucket list. Why its called that however, I seriously can't tell. All I know is, it served a guideline for me to follow. I had some crazy dreams written on my list! As at Junior Secondary School (JSS) 1, my list went like this:
1. Get Mike to kiss you (He was my first crush...it died quickly thereafter though)
2. Join the choir in school..(Blah! I sucked at singing)
3. Get noticed..(Who was I kidding? I wasn't exactly Miss World standards)
4. Never speak to Ada again!..(She said she likes Mike too! How pathetic could we get?)
Well it goes on and on....but you get the drift. Its funny how the older we get, he more our tastes for things, needs and even wants changes! What I would have killed to have in JSS is definitely not worth my consideration in SS (Senior Secondary). Not to mention now that I'm all fully grown.
My point is, people change. Either because of circumstances or just because of change itself. We evolve I guess. Like they say, the only constant thing in Life is change. As human beings, we tend to be selfish in nature. While we love to be around people who make us feel good about ourselves, we usually don't bother to discover if people feel good about themselves when around us too. We gravitate towards people we perceive are better than us, believing that their luck would rub off on us.
Why do you think after winning the lottery, the winner suddenly finds himself with friends and family members he had, prior to his winning, never even heard of, rushing to be by his side?
Or consider a celebrity having enough fans or likes on Facebook or twitter than a normal person? Everybody wants to be associated with greatness It's a 'true' fact.
Now that I'm in my twenties, my bucket list has evolved vehemently...goes like these:
1. Be working in a reputable company (doing that)
2. Visit Paris at least once in my life (still very pending...sigh)
3. Be married by the age of 28 (still pending; Aunty Nkem may work her ways to hasten that if encouraged)
4. Take dance lessons (no time! but I dance in the shower though! does that count?)
5. Doing one new thing each day (hmmmm...no comment)
6. Visit the gym at least thrice a day (that hasn't happened yet).....
.............
As you can see from my list, I haven't really achieved most of what I had resolved to accomplish. But that doesn't faze me. I know that its a goal I would have to work towards, and very determinedly. Determination goes hand in hand with Success. Every morning I wake up, I look at the list (an easiest task since I pasted it on the wall of my bedroom) and say to myself, "You can do it Sam!".
And that's all the motivation I need. Nobody has a hold of my destiny like i do. Someone once said, 75% of our destiny rests in our hands and the remaining 25% is what God can help us with. So what are you doing with your 75%?
Most religious people depend on God 95% and only 5% on themselves. Even the bible said, "Heaven helps those who help themselves". So, are you ready to make a bucket list??
